Northumberland January/February 2023
I was lucky enough to spend ten days on the wonderful Northumberland coast and in addition, to experience some wonderful dawn light. I avoided Bamburgh for the most part as my tides were not quite right, apart from one glorious day with perfect waves and sublime winter light. Lindisfarne and Cocklawburn proved very successful during the week. Working with the new Fuji h2 was relatively easy as I spent some time getting to know the menu and setting all up as I needed before I went. Nonetheless it still takes time to get to know a new camera …….. The trusted Nikon 850 was also in use and will be for some time. Such a great camera with wonderful dynamic range.
The beauty of Northumberland in the winter months is that it is empty in terms of tourists which means you literally have many beaches to yourself. The expansive beaches and the huge skies are captivating, plus the geological rock formations are a real draw for me. Cocklawburn is particularly interesting as the rocks spread for miles and even fossils can be found. During the trip I ventured across the border into Scotland and had a perfect high tide on a cloudy day for the Bridge to Nowwhere shot. I was also allowed to shoot the Torness nuclear plant which was surrounded by brussel spouts! The dying leaves were beautiful in the field. You do need permission to shoot this as its a nuclear plant but a simple email is all that is needed with your car reg. and full details. As with most visits that I plan these days, I try to always seek out the more intimate shots within the landsccape as well as the big vistas. Hope you enjoy the shots below.
