December 2022 - The North Norfolk day

Ruth lead a fantastic photography day in North Norfolk. She was clear in all her instructions for us to be prepared for the day and also meeting and timings were very carefully controlled to keep the pace of the day comfortable and interesting. It was a bitterly cold day, with an early start of course, but Ruth was conscious of all of our comforts and safety and the sharing of knowledge and composition camera skills was outstanding.

Having been inspired by Ruth's talks to our camera club and following her on various media platforms, you can see that she has a natural ability to capture a special scene and of course that's what we were all there to try and achieve.

On a personal level I feel I achieved so much from the day and I'm sure my fellow photographers felt exactly as I did. I think I may have come away with 'a keeper' and the collaboration over our delicious lunch was also a highlight of the day.

Thank you so much Ruth for a superb day in such challenging, freezing cold conditions and inspiring us to look where we probably would never normally look for a composition and to get out there and learn what our cameras can really achieve.

September 2022 - Sue

I spent a lovely few hours on a one to one with Ruth at Southwold Pier for sunrise followed by some abstract shots of fishing nets etc by the River  Blyth. Ruth has a lovely calm way about her and made me feel very at ease from the start. I learnt so much and I have some super images from the morning too!  Thankyou Ruth

Spring 2021- Zoe

I have been shooting Manual and in RAW for a couple of years but sadly not had the confidence or understanding to edit my images which became very
frustrating.
I was lucky to have watched Ruth doing a presentation on landscaping and was extremely inspired by her work so decided to see if she would be able to
help me with my editing. After finding out what areas I was struggling with, and what I hoped to achieve, Ruth put together a bespoke online Zoom six week course which
included a detailed introduction on Bridge and then a step by step training on Camera Raw/Photoshop editing tools.
I started as a complete editing beginner and now feel competent and confident to edit my own images to a good standard. Throughout the course Ruth made sure at every step that I understood what I
was doing. At no point in this course did I feel overwhelmed it was incredibly enjoyable. Ruth was always encouraging and motivational and her knowledge is just incredible.
I really can’t recommend Ruth highly enough!!!

Autumn 2020 – Jennie

Landscape photography mentoring with Award Winning Photographer, Ruth Grindrod.

I thought I had won the lottery when Ruth agreed to take me on as her student and mentor me in my quest to improve my landscape photography skills.  Whilst thinking I knew the basis of the subject; Ruth developed a six-week plan and put me through my paces.  The lessons were delivered on a 1:1 basis via zoom, with comprehensive interactive training material.  This allowed me to work on my weaknesses and my so-called strengths.  Each session ended with specific course work which Ruth set for me, which enabled me to put into practice the previous weeks learning objectives.  Ruth provided me with constructive criticism which has now enabled me to evaluate my own work and how I should approach each subject.  Ruth spent her whole professional career in the Education Sector and is a greatly admired female photographer, I am so privileged to be called her student and to have gone through her mentoring programme.  If you are considering personal developing and you are committed to learning, look no further than Ruth Grindrod.  Forever in your debt and forever grateful for all that you have done to help develop me – Jennie

‘I would also like to thank one very special lady. A lady who has inspired, encouraged and supported me. I commend to you the Award-Winning Landscape Photographer Ruth Grindrod. It can be hard when you first start off on your photographic journey, it can be just as hard when you think you are getting somewhere but still need direction and a sound mentor. I will forever be indebted to Ruth for her kindness and friendship. Ruth is an inspiration and is one of the country’s leading female landscape photographers. She is the proud holder of many prestigious photographic awards and this year she featured in the Landscape Photographer of The Year Book, with her stunning image taken at Hardley Staithe, Norfolk.’

Norwich and District Photographic Society November 2021

Woodland and Coastal Photography workshop with Ruth Grindrod

Do you remember those long days of childhood when you got up early and with a group of friends walked through woodlands and across heaths, made bows and arrows and watched the birds? When everything seemed right about the world and there were no problems to worry about.

Ruth's workshop last Sunday (7th November) wasn't quite as relaxed as this opening paragraph might suggest but a dozen members of the Society’s Landscape Group, armed with tripods and cameras tumbled out of bed around four o'clock in the morning to travel to beautiful Suffolk to practice our photographic techniques armed with the notes and suggestions of Ruth and a lot of personal enthusiasm. Ruth had scouted four venues for the day, Captain's Wood first, just after dawn, another smaller ancient woodland Staverton Thicks, then onto Hollesley Common and ending on the shingle at Shingle Street.

We practiced finding compositions with camera 'phones, tried different frame sizes and took hard and soft images. Ruth's advice was clear and enthusiastic and different for each venue. We tried portrait and landscape modes, using polarisers and checking how the shapes of trees related to one another.

As we were individually afoot in the different venues Ruth came round and offered encouragement and advice to everyone - suggesting dancing around the viewpoint to check different aspects, including leaves and sunlight into the frame for effect, thinking about how the picture might look in black and white.

The day ended on the beach at Shingle Street at sunset. A row of photographers outlined against the night sky with tripods and filters all pointing at the setting sun and all experiencing the good karma of a wonderful day of photography.

The effort of early rising and the hard mental work of working out the shots resulted in a glorious day out. Our thanks to Ruth, not just for the venues, but for the inspiration, ideas and enthusiasm.

Post-workshop zoom meeting

After the workshop NDPS members sent their ‘favourite’ image to Ruth who last Thursday evening via zoom showed us her own approach to post-editing in Photoshop. Thank you Ruth for organising the workshop and follow-up session. We all learnt so much and we all look forward to working with you again in the future…!
