The end of another year and what have I done ?

Patagonia-Chile April 2024

Well, quite a lot actually in terms of photographic adventures!  I have worked locally in Norfolk and Suffolk but have also been so lucky to visit Harris and Lewis again, Perthshire and Nairn, a brief stay in Northumberland, France, London, Yorkshire, Lanzarote and of course the trip of my lifetime so far that is, to Patagonia in Chile. My blogs now contain a range of new photography from some of these locations including Patagonia and my website is currently being updated to reflect my new work. But as all photographers know, it takes a long time to remove what you don’t want and replace with what you think you do want, as the more you look at it the more you think ‘I’m not quite sure about this one……’ Anyway, it’s a job that has to be done.

In addition to my travels, I have been asked to present talks to a range of clubs in the UK and Ireland. My new talk Amazing landscapes – featuring my work from Iceland and Patagonia seems to have been a success and Colours tones and textures still proves to be very popular with clubs.  I do continually update my talks so improving them, I hope.  Reviews from clubs are posted on my site so do have a look if you are interested in booking a talk.  I have also worked with a number of people helping them with their photography and showing them the landscapes of Norfolk and Suffolk.  This has been great fun and the weather played ball some of the time! In terms of publications I have had work published in the Frames books and online on their site, articles in Outdoor photography magazine, shortlisted work in Scottish Nature photographer of the year 23  publication, work exhibited at Covent garden’s ‘Fuji’s house of photography’, shortlisted for Close-up Photographer of the Year 2024 out of 11k entries, (the final results are yet to be announced)  and an Honourable Mention in the International Colour Awards May 24. I have also been an invited judge at Norwich Photographic Society Print Awards.  2025 proves to be another exciting year with a big trip booked to Japan, another to Prague, with local work as always in Norfolk and Suffolk, and a trip to Ireland.    I do intend to write a new talk featuring the landscapes of East Anglia as I feel this is long overdue. It will be ready at the end of next year as I intend to shoot a lot of new work throughout the year.

I continue to post on Meta and Instagram but no longer use Twitter.  The ever more manipulated algorithms used by Meta present us with more and more advertising and increasing amounts of rubbish in terms of videos, to dull the mind. I am not referring to photographers’ work but to the obsure and peculiar videos etc that are the norm it now seems. I also feel that the need to post photos just to elicit likes is well past its sell by date and the ever-present algorithm of posting very similar type of photographs, rather than a range of work is really quite limiting.  Style develops slowly and changes according to the landscapes you encounter and how you develop your skills as a photographer. True style is rare, it always has been. If there’s an accurate way to characterise what style is in photography, then it very well might be the notion that it comes about when we are completely honest with ourselves and our work. The reason I say this is because you can never discover your own idiosyncrasies as a photographer while you attempt to imitate the style of someone else. Anyway enough of that….. here are some of my favourite shots from 2024. I hope you enjoy .

Wishing all a happy and healthy 2025.
